History of Cypress, Texas Area

History Detectives

Member volunteers research historical events and photographs from the area, as well as artifacts that are donated. Developing a continuous history of the Cypress and Fairbanks area through time, especially the Cypress Top Park area, is an ongoing adventure!

Early businesses

We are keeping a photo and timeline history of the early enterprises of Cypress. If you have photographs or survey plats showing old buildings, please contact us.

Early roads

It is truly amazing how the roads in the Cypress area have changed from the old wagon trails, to farm roads, to modern superhighways. We have traced many old roads, even back to the old Washington-Harrisburg Road that Sam Houston marched (through Cypress!) on the Runaway Scrape.

Postal History

Cypress had many post offices, dating back to the Texas Republic. Postal records provide the names and dates of the old Postmasters, which link back to the Census records. The Cypress Top Pct 3 Store contains some nice artifacts from its Post Office days.

Railroad History

The extension of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad to Cypress in the 1850’s made it an early commercial and transportation center. This created a “downtown” Cypress, with hotels, stores, and saloons, in contrast with the widespread farming homesteads.

Genealogy of Cypress Area Families

Genealogy

Our members have researched over 300 families in the Cypress and Fairbanks areas . . . We would love to share the history that we have on your family, and combine it with your records.

Oral Histories

Some of the most valuable (and interesting!) information we get is from the memories told to us by long-time residents of the area. Contact us to set up an interview, or send us your memories by mail or E-mail.

Collecting Historic Photos

Old photos contain a wealth of information, about the people and the buildings and landscape of an area. If you have historic photos of the Cypress area, we will scan them and return your originals. If you have photos or small artifacts that you would like to donate, we will keep and preserve them for you.

Program Meetings

Members are always welcome to attend business meetings of the Board of Directors. In addition, we hold occasional events which have additional programs history presentations, story-swappin’, etc. for members.
